Community Development
development intern/soccer mentor at South Bronx United. I began working closely with Katelan Newman on the development team of the nonprofit at SBU where I learned valuable excel skills, how to use the Salesforce software, community outreach through email writing, and more. This side of the internship was primarily remote. It gave me a solid understanding of the behind-the-scenes work of a non-profit, interacting with the executive director/founder as well as everyone else on the development team. Though I learned a lot and made connections with interesting and great people, the most rewarding and positive experience I had was running an elective and being a soccer mentor for SBU's summer scholars program. This program runs for 6 weeks daily, primarily for underprivileged youth in the Bronx/Harlem area allowing kids to explore academic interests as well as develop as high-level soccer players. I taught an elective called "Storytelling through Music" every Monday through Wednesday for the second half of the summer and was a soccer mentor/coach every Monday through Thursday which allowed me to interact and form good relationships with a lot of students in the program. Along with all of this, I helped out as needed within the non-profit, whether it was building a soccer table tennis table (Teqball) or helping set up for a community-wide event right outside of Yankee stadium, I was there to help whenever I could.
