Throughout the duration of the internship, I was able to explore the realm of child literacy while delving into the research, creation, and development processes of the company; working besides the Blossom team and two other interns, we worked on creating STEM education materials for young English language learners encouraging their use of both English and their home language. One of the largest projects involved rewriting the current library of Blossom books (26 books) for a younger audience, stratifying the content so the company can offer a harder and easier reading level for each book. Once rewriting each book, I was able to input them on the platform studio site, and pilot my rewrites with preschool students at Grand Street Settlement Head Start Program preschools in NYC. Other tasks included creating teaching materials aligning with Blossom books and NYC curriculum standards, researching bilingual dialogic reading, growth mindset, and social-emotional learning, and designing guides and presentations to educate families and schools about Blossom’s bilingual story switching method.
